One of my favourite places in York is Delrio’s on the corner of Micklegate. I’m a big fan of Italian and so had been banging on about going here for ages. Yet for some reason we never managed it, until February.
It was a very cold snowy evening so after a quick stop in Brewdog for a drink (it has a fantastic range of beer that Jane enjoyed sampling. I enjoyed their wine) we headed to Delrio’s.
Being underground, it’s the perfect venue for a wintry evening. The restaurant is based in a cellar and the tables are all scattered around in alcoves. This means that despite always being busy you get a nice quiet experience during your meal. The décor is full of pictures and knick knacks giving you a truly Italian experience. It was easy to forget the ‘East from the Beast’ was raging outside.
For starters we went for a sharing option. Delicious homemade bread and olives on one side, with Melanzane ripiene on the other. We can never resist an aubergine dish and this didn’t disappoint, a lovely courgette and pepper filling complemented by the rich tomato sauce. Moving onto mains I obviously went for a pizza (is it possible to suffer from pizza addiction, I can never say no?). The vegetarian one was a delicious combination of mushrooms artichokes and peppers with a lovely tangy tomato base. Jane went for the filled pasta option with a classic combination of pumpkin and ricotta topped with a sweet buttery sage sauce. Both mains were superb, and just the right size.
Neither of us sampled the desserts as we were too full but if desserts are your thing you are in for a treat here. Meringue of the day sounded intriguing and judging by the standard of cooking we sampled the tiramisu must be sublime.
Giovanni Delrio has built his reputation on his high standard of cooking using traditional Sardinian receipies and you can certainly see why it is so hard to get a table here!
🍷 Meal for two with bottle of wine: £53.15
🎉 My Highlight: The pizza of course with its perfect amount of topping to bread.
⚡️ Jane’s Highlight: Finally getting to visit after I’d gone on about it for so long! Although I could have done without the 4 mile round trip walk in deep snow but that just shows how committed I was to finally visiting!
🍴 If I could change one thing… We should have gone before – how have we lived in York since 1994 & never been here together?!
